Forløbets formål er at give indsigt i præsidentvalget i USA. Gennem retoriske analyser af taler ser vi på talernes indhold, temaer, appelformer, politiske agendaer og de to præsidentkandidaters partier. Forløbet berører ligeledes temaet 'the American Dream' og sætter dette i relation til det amerikanske samfund og dets værdier. For at sætte forløbet i perspektiv inddrages uddrag fra filmen 'Primary Colors', som omhandler alle de ovennævnte punkter og afspejler en kampagne under et primærvalg.
