Formålet med forløbet er at belyse den sociale og historiske udvikling under Den Industrielle Revolution og Victoriatiden, hvor det britiske imperium ekspanderede bl.a. pga. handel og kolonialisering. Forløbet berører temaer såsom klasseskel i samfundet, industralisme, romanen som genre, uddannelse, kolonisering og imperialisme.
